Kia is recalling thousands of Niro vehicles in the US due to a potential wiring issue that could affect airbag deployment and seatbelt pretensioners.

Kia is recalling over 80,000 Niro vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the floor wiring assembly under the front passenger seat. The wiring can be damaged if the seat is repeatedly moved back and forth, potentially affecting the deployment of airbags and the operation of the seatbelt pretensioner in a crash.

If the wires are damaged, it could prevent the airbags or seatbelt pretensioner from working properly, lead to an inability to suppress the passenger front airbag if a child or small occupant is seated, or even cause the passenger side airbag to deploy unintentionally even without a crash. The recall affects 2023-2025 Kia Niro EV models, 2023-2025 Niro Hybrids, and 2023-2025 Niro Plug-In Hybrid models manufactured between specific dates. Kia became aware of the issue in November 2024 after a field report described damage to the passenger floor wiring assembly, triggering an airbag warning light. Despite the potential severity of the issue, Kia has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this problem, but is aware of four warranty claims. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by first-class mail starting March 14 and will be instructed to take their cars to a Kia dealership for inspection and repair. Dealers will inspect the floor wiring assembly and replace it if necessary, as well as reroute the wiring and install protective coverings to prevent future damage
