The EV9 brings this upmarket Kia into direct competition with the Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQS, Audi Q8, BMW iX and Volvo EX90. Would it have made more sense if parent company Hyundai ’s upmarket Genesis brand had launched it?
Kia has launched a range of very competent EVs, starting with the EV6, and now promises to move down-market with the EV4, 3 and soon the EV2. Its Niro range offers ICE, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs. “I think it would have made more sense to launch such a big and expensive vehicle under the Genesis brand,” Taganza said. Genesis is tasked with entering the so—called premium sector, dominated by the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus“Kia is trying to position itself as a little bit upper the mainstream market nearly the Premium one. A Kia EV9 is a very expensive family car, positioned as a competitor to the Tesla X or BMW iX.
