Kia will soon provide adapters allowing its electric vehicle owners to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations. The adapters will be free for recent EV6 and EV9 owners.
Kia is soon to provide adapters that allow its electric vehicle owners to utilize Tesla Supercharger stations, ending the frustration of incompatible charging networks. A Kia U.S. spokesperson confirmed that dealers have received shipments of these adapters and that EV6 and EV9 owners will be notified via the Kia Access smartphone app when theirs become available.
The adapters will be free of charge for recent EV6 and EV9 owners, and purchasable at an affordable price for those who took delivery before September 2024. \While the initial rollout faced a slight delay, pushing back the access date from January 15th, Kia has not yet disclosed the purchase price for the adapters. However, given the price range of similar NACS adapters on the market, it is expected to be around $200. Hyundai, Kia's corporate cousin, has already announced that it will offer its NACS adapters for free. \This move by Kia follows the industry-wide shift towards Tesla's NACS charging standard. Ford spearheaded this trend in 2023, and nearly every major EV manufacturer has since announced plans to integrate NACS access into their vehicles, either through adapters or by directly incorporating the NACS port starting with 2025 models. The adoption of NACS is driven by the desire to provide a seamless and high-quality charging experience comparable to Tesla's Supercharger network. The smaller and more user-friendly NACS plug is also seen as a significant advantage over the older Combined Charging System (CCS) standard prevalent in the US market. Kia will begin incorporating the native NACS port into its EVs starting with the 2025 models, ensuring future compatibility with the expanding Supercharger network. In the meantime, current EV6 and EV9 owners can utilize the forthcoming adapters to take advantage of the extensive Supercharger infrastructure
