The four men are accused of 18 murders and six attempted murders, which occurred in Khayelitsha during the COVID-19 lockdown:
They are also accused of being self-appointed protectors of the suburb’s business by extracting fees from small enterprises.
During their most recent court appearance, Judge Robert Henney noted that no judges have been available to tend to this case due to a backlog in the court roll. Furthermore, 20 judges are currently occupied with other criminal matters. ‘So, it’s impossible to deal with this matter in the first term [of 2024]. This kind of case will take some time.’Nyalara, an ex-teacher-turned-taxi-owner from Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape, is accused of orchestrating the murders.
