Madison Keys of the U.S. celebrated after defeating Iga Swiatek of Poland in their semifinal match at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne, Australia, early Friday, Jan. 24, 2025. Keys, 29, pulled off a stunning 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) upset victory, saving a match point along the way. This marks Keys' second Grand Slam final appearance after being the 2017 U.S. Open runner-up. She will face No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka , the two-time defending champion, in the final on Saturday.
Swiatek had been on a dominant run at Melbourne Park, but Keys managed to break her serve eight times throughout the match, including each of Swiatek's first two service games. Keys, who turns 30 next month, has been using a new racket this season, which has helped her generate power and relieve strain on her right shoulder. This victory extends her winning streak to 11 matches, including a tournament win in Adelaide. Meanwhile, Sabalenka defeated good friend Paula Badosa earlier Thursday with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Sabalenka, a 26-year-old from Belarus, now has a chance to become the first woman since 1999 to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. Sabalenka and Badosa, who had a respectful but distant demeanor throughout the match, had a pre-match exchange of pleasantries. During Sabalenka's on-court interview, she made light of the situation by joking about taking Badosa on a shopping spree to make amends for the loss.
