Jeff Lynne, ELO’s frontman and co-founder, announced Tandy’s death in a social media post. No cause of death was given. “It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy,” Lynne said inon Wednesday. “He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together. Sending all my love to Sheila & the Tandy family.”

Born on March 26, 1948, in Birmingham, England, Tandy joined ELO in 1973, three years after the band’s founding. He initially played bass guitar for ELO but became the band’s keyboardist after Roy Wood left. Tandy remained a member of ELO until it disbanded in 1986. Nearly 30 years later, the band reformed in 2014 as Jeff Lynne’s ELO, and Tandy joined again.
