Locals in Rutherglen and Hamilton West will finally have the opportunity to elect a successor to the disgraced Margaret Ferrier, who was binned by voters after breaking covid rules.Labour have been in the shadow of the SNP for over a decade, but Anas Sarwar’s party is flourishing and is the favourite to win.
They would have voted Labour in 1997 before gradually switching to the SNP in 2007. Nicola Sturgeon was popular among this cohort.Sarwar has targeted them by hitting out at planned council tax rises and blasting suggestions of a congestion charge for people driving into Glasgow. UNIONIST TACTICAL VOTERS It is a fact of political life in Scotland that the constitution is the biggest influence on voting habits.Pro-UK backers will almost inevitably opt for Labour, the Tories and the Lib Dems.At the 2019 general election, Ferrier won with a majority of 5,230, but 10,845 people voted either Conservative or Lib Dem.
The key factor in Labour’s success in 2017 was not the strength of their own party, but the apathy of SNP voters.With the SNP enduring a nightmare year, the Nationalists are worried about a repeat of 2017.
