It had little effect on the outcome but Nick Walsh's penalty call being backed up by VAR was baffling.
A year to the day since VAR was given it’s live TV debut in Scottish football and Hearts hosted Celtic at Tynecastle again.
Matt O’Riley continued his rich vein of form, volleying home an exquisite opener. Daizen Maeda couldn't have been any closer to tap in a second. Within seconds of the restart, Celtic were awarded a controversial penalty that they failed to convert, but Kyogo did make it 3-0 soon after, so no harm done as far as Brendan Rodgers is concerned. Hearts pulled one back through captain Lawrence Shankland, who netted his first league goal since the opening day of the season.
Offside at second goal A VAR check was required after Daizen Maeda bundled home from close range to double the visitors’ advantage. A fine move saw Hatate pull back across goal for his compatriot. There was some doubt in real time as to whether Maeda was ahead of the ball, but replays confirmed, to viewers at home and the officials at Clydesdale House, that he was indeed.
Walsh pointed to the spot after Kyogo seemed to throw himself a little too enthusiastically to the turf as he tried to nip in and toe the ball ahead of Alex Cochrane. Contact was minimal, if any, but Walsh was adamant.
