Construction is due to start in the 2030s
Key appointments are being made to deliver a nuclear energy project in Nottinghamshire which is set to bring 10,000 jobs to the county. As part of Government plans to end the use of coal power by October 2024, the UK's first ever nuclear fusion energy plant will be based at the West Burton A power station near Retford.
Debbie Kempton, with decades of experience in aerospace engineering and previous roles in companies such as BAE systems, will be the director of the engineering programme. Sounak Dutta has left his role at the Babcock International Group to become the director of supply chain and commercial for the West Burton project.
Finally, Dr James R. Cowan will be the director of programme development. The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production plant at West Burton will also be home to a brand new skills academy when it is launched, with hopes having been expressed that it will drive "huge inward investment" in the East Midlands.
