The Greco-Roman settlement, known as Karanis, was previously thought to have been abandoned in the 5th century.

An ancient Greco-Roman settlement in Egypt survived longer than traditionally assumed, archaeologists have proposed in a study. The study, published in the journal Antiquity, reports that the settlement may have been occupied right up until the 7th century. Previous hypotheses have suggested that the site was abandoned in the middle of the 5th century. The settlement, known as Karanis, was an agricultural town located in the Faiyum Oasis that is thought to have been founded in the 3rd century B.C.

'The timing of the 'decline and fall' of Karanis has wider significance in understanding the socioeconomic history of late antiquity and the environmental changes affecting the Faiyum region at the end of a period known as the Roman Climatic Optimum. This period, which is thought to have occurred between the 3rd–4th centuries, was characterized by unusually warm weather in the Mediterranean regain and other parts of Europe.
