Kevin Sumlin leaving USFL's Houston Gamblers for assistant gig at Maryland
After one season as Houston Gamblers head coach, Kevin Sumlin is heading back to the college game, reportedly accepting an assistant job at Maryland. The United States Football League's Houston Gamblers — who still haven't actually played a game in Houston — apparently will be in the market for a new coach.
According to multiple reports Tuesday, Kevin Sumlin, the Gamblers' coach and general manager during the inaugural 2022 season, is being hired as co-offensive coordinator at Maryland, returning him to his college roots. Sumlin led the Gamblers to a 3-7 record and last-place finish in the South Division in last year's inaugural season of the rebooted USFL, with the Gamblers playing all their games in Birmingham, Ala.
Sumlin, best known for his stints as head coach at Houston and Texas A&M , last coached in the college ranks in 2020, when he was fired after starting 0-5 in his third season at Arizona. While Sumlin is on the move, so are the Gamblers. This season, they'll play their games out of the USFL's Memphis, Tenn., hub along with that city's new Showboats framchise, the former Tampa Bay Bandits. Birmingham, Detroit and Canton, Ohio, also will serve as USFL hubs this season.
