Jury selection began Thursday in Kevin Spacey’s civil trial related to sexual-misconduct allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp, which were among the first levied against the “House of Cards” star.

Mr. Rapp’s accusations, made public five years ago, center on an alleged encounter in Mr. Spacey’s New York home in 1986, when Mr. Rapp was 14 years old and Mr. Spacey was in his 20s. Mr. Rapp, now 50, alleges Mr. Spacey grabbed his buttocks, placed him on a bed and laid on him without his consent, according to Mr. Rapp’s complaint. Mr. Rapp “was forced to extricate himself” and ran to his bathroom, the complaint said. Before quickly leaving Mr. Spacey’s home, Mr. Rapp alleges, Mr. Spacey tried to convince him to stay.Mr.

Mr. Spacey argued Mr. Rapp’s allegation didn’t constitute sexual assault and therefore wasn’t protected by New York’s 2019 Child Victims Act, which allows people who were victims of sexual assault as children to bring civil claims until they are 55 years old. Mr. Rapp, known for his roles in “Star Trek: Discovery” and the original cast of the Broadway musical “Rent,”. At the time, Mr. Spacey said he didn’t remember the encounter, but said, “if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” Mr. Spacey has since denied the accusations in court filings.
