The GOP leader’s failure to control his chaos caucus and avert a likely government shutdown could force him to turn to Democrats—and potentially drive away Republicans. Matt Gaetz tells VF that “McCarthy can’t work with Democrats” and “expect to remain the Republican Speaker.”
While Gaetz was instrumental in getting McCarthy to bring the four appropriations measures—which would fund defense, homeland security, agriculture, and state-foreign operations—up for a vote, what happens next is far from clear. As one Democratic staffer put it tobefore the House was gaveled in on Tuesday, “If anyone is telling you they know how tonight will go, they’re BS’ing you.… Now, should they get the rule passed, that doesn’t mean [Republicans] are in the clear.
McCarthy’s math is problematic. With a slim majority, he only has a handful of Republican votes to spare—a reality complicated by a series of GOP member absences. And even if he can muster enough support for the four appropriations bills for them to pass the House, they are dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
