Even as the Speaker kicks off an evidence-free inquiry into Biden, his right flank is stepping up its demands and steering the government toward a shutdown. As one Democratic rep tells VF, “The McCarthy-MAGA brand is chaos and distraction.”
’s foreign business dealings. Indeed, McCarthy used allegations, not evidence, to prop up his decision to order the inquiry. “House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct,” McCarthy said during a press conference Tuesday. “Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.” But it was quickly clear that McCarthy’s decision did little to quell the right-wing rebellion.
When it comes to McCarthy’s impeachment inquiry, House Freedom Caucus members and their allies—including Gaetz—are supportive; however, they’ve also made clear that gutting government spending is paramount and that the inquiry won’t distract from this goal. “We can do two things at one time,”told reporters following the press conference. He added: “That’s a ridiculous argument—that we can’t pursue the impeachment inquiry while we’re dealing with the funding situation.
Some even indicated that the inquiry doesn’t go far enough. “Well, let’s see. I mean, if we actually have some real teeth behind this inquiry, and a vote like the Speaker promised that there would be, then we may be able to get the job done. But I’m not waiting throughout the rest of this Congress to actually hold Joe Biden and his family accountable,”told reporters as she left the House Freedom Caucus presser.
If McCarthy doesn’t follow through on an impeachment vote on the House floor, Boebert has a threat of her own: “If it takes too long to get a vote for impeachment, then I’m forcing a vote on impeachment,” she said. McCarthy’s decision to order three committees—Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means—to formally launch an inquiry into Biden, as opposed to holding a vote on whether to launch one, is arguably indicative of the fissures within his caucus. It suggests that he didn’t actually have the votes. He said earlier this month that he wouldn’t take this course of action. And McCarthy previously slammed former Speakerfor this very move.
