A party needs to control 218 seats in the U.S. House to have a majority. As of 12 a.m. Wednesday, the Associated Pressthat Republicans have secured 198 seats while Democrats have secured 167. Democrats need to secure 51 of the remaining House races in order to keep control of the chamber, while Republicans need to win just 20.
And even if Republicans do overtake the chamber, as was expected, their margin looks to be much narrower than was anticipated from the projected"red wave," something McCarthy conspicuously did not acknowledge. The outcome of this election has serious implications for the careers of both McCarthy and Pelosi.
