Kerr County residents are still waiting for the promised flood warning system, including outdoor warning sirens, five months after a devastating flood. Despite the passage of flood preparedness bills, no installations have been made due to funding issues. Local officials express urgency with summer camps approaching.

KERRVILLE, Texas - Residents of Kerr County are still grappling with the aftermath of the Hill Country flooding disaster, which occurred nearly five months ago. The community is reminded of the devastation by the ongoing search for two missing individuals. In response to the disaster, the state promised a flood warning system to prevent future tragedies. However, despite the passage of several flood preparedness bills this past summer, including one mandating the installation of outdoor warning sirens in flash flood-prone areas, no installations have been made yet. "It just seems shocking that it has not been funded yet by the state. This needs to get done, particularly with the summer camps coming back next year. And look, they're asking the camps to comply with some really high bars," said Hall. Hall emphasized the urgency, stating, "Were asking the camps to comply with all these things by basically next May, because that's when the camps would normally start coming online. And yet, here, the state hasn't done its job and making sure that that siren goes in, and until that goes in, how are they going to know how to train for that?" Assistant Chief Kirk Griffin of the Hunt Volunteer Fire Department highlighted the major issue as the funding source. "The full blown package, I understand, is in the millions. The question becomes, does the state provide it or does somebody locally try to put that together and then get a grant reimbursement from the state?" asked Griffin."I'm sure everybody would be happy and get by with it not being in place this summer, as long as there is a plan in place and working," he said.City and river authority officials remain focused on rebuilding a safer, more resilient Kerr County, aiming to have improvements in place by summer 2026. They are exploring all funding options to meet this timeline.
