Mary Ngugi is creating a better future for the next generation of female athletes

The training program—located in Nyahururu Town—supports eight 14-22-year-old girls at a time, focusing on building their 1500m and 800m speed, and creating a supportive, safe environment where the nation’s next generation of female athletes can learn, grow, and be themselves.

The girls attend school in the morning, then run through town before a 40-minute track session, according to. Back at camp, they eat dinner together, and study. Under Ngugi’s tutelage, homework is given equal importance to the young women’s athletic training. "We are trying to empower these girls to know that I’m not just an athlete,” she says.

Ngugi chose the name Nala because it’s an African word for a powerful woman or lioness.
