Protesters threw stones at police in Kenya’s capital and attackers set fire to an office run by the president’s party in a western town on Thursday during a third wave of demonstrationsThousands joined marches called by opposition leader Raila Odinga against high living costs and alleged fraud in last year’s vote. The government has said the vote was fair, defended its economic record and called for the protests to stop.
Steve Odhiambo, a 31-year-old unemployed graduate, said he was demonstrating over the vote, joblessness and high food prices. Kenya’s inflation rose to 9.2% year-on-year in February from 9.0% a month earlier, largely driven by food and transport prices. Odinga said his car was hit by live bullets, an assertion which Reuters could not verify. The national police spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment and the interior ministry spokesperson referred Reuters to police.

President Ruto Downplays Protests in Kenya, Speaks on Ukraine WarIn an exclusive interview with Deutsche Welle, President William Ruto has said that the war in Ukraine has devastatingly affected commodity prices of grain and fertilizers, adding that the international community needed to work towards a viable, peaceful resolution. Ruto is on a visit to Germany and he has called on China to encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Urkaine. He also downplayed the anti-government protests rocking the East African nation as an opposition ploy. Ruto's visit to Berlin comes as Kenya is grappling with a high cost of living partly due to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, which led to shortages of fertilizers and grain in sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, anti-government protests over the soaring prices of essential commodities have further threatened to cripple Kenya's economy. Ruto hopes to reassure Germany's business community to invest in Kenya despite the weekly anti-government protests spearheaded by veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga. Regardless of the potential threat the protests pose to would-be investors, Ruto reassured German business owners that Kenya is open to investment. Quizzed if he had not broken several campaign promises and had removed subsidies for fuel and maize flour - a food staple - Ruto said the demonstrations in Nairobi were not about the cost of living but rather about election results. Germany has promised to support Kenya in its attempt to better penetrate the European Union market. Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz said Kenya is a true friend and stable country in Africa whose economy must be helped to thrive.
