Daily Racing Form reported that veterinarians checked the horse after its morning gallop
Kentucky Derby entrant Forte works out at Churchill Downs Tuesday, May 2, 2023, in Louisville, Ky. The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 6. Kentucky Derby favorite Forte, trained by Todd Pletcher, was suddenly scratched from the race by state veterinarian Nick Smith Saturday morning.
The news was broken first on Twitter by David Grening of Daily Racing Form and later confirmed by Churchill Downs public relations, who said state veterinarians were concerned with a bruise on Forte’s right foot. Forte had been installed as the morning-line favorite Monday and his odds drifted up to 7-2 in early Friday wagering.DRF’s Grening reported on Twitter that a long conversation was taking place between the owner of Forte and Kentucky Racing Commission veterinarians. Minutes later, Grening reported the horse’s scratch.
The following two Twitter reports from a TV crew at Churchill Downs show state veterinarians examining Forte and subsequently advising the owner and trainer of the scratch.
