The decision to disqualify Maximum Security from the Kentucky Derby and award Country House the win has caused a nightmare scenario for horse racing
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The morning after becoming the first Kentucky Derby trainer to win the race via disqualification, the man who trained Country House, the winner, was still conflicted.
“I feel terrible that I have to apologize for winning,” said 65-year-old Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. “I don’t want to give off the impression that I’m not happy about winning. I’m thrilled for the owners and the horse but it’s such an unusual way to have to go to the winner’s circle.”
