United Queendom, a play about Queen Caroline and Lady Henrietta Howard, will be staged in the actual rooms that once housed the royals' state apartments.
always feels like stepping into the past—but Kensington Palace is set to take that experience to the next level with its first-ever theater production., tells the stories of two overlooked 18th century women: Queen Caroline and Lady Henrietta Howard. The former is the wife of King George II, the latter, his mistress; both once called the palace's state apartments home.
Caroline and Henrietta"refused to back down in a male dominated world, refused to be silenced and refused to bow to tradition," James Seager, the creative director for theater production company Les Enfants Terribles, said in a statement."They changed the course of history re-defining the role of women at court, fundamentally changing palace life forever in the process."
The immersive production will first welcome guests to George II's birthday celebration. Then, they'll choose to follow either Caroline or Henrietta. All told, the story stretches across 14 different rooms in Kensington Palace. Working in an iconic building does come with its challenges, though."We usually build our own walls so we can drill holes for cabling and things but that won’t be happening," Les Enfants creative producer Fiona Porritt told the."We’ve had to be creative and use theatrical elements such as lighting and music." The crew will also only have 90 minutes after the building closes to the public each day to prepare for the show.
