Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , has brought renewed attention to the growing concerns over processed foods and their impact on public health. Lawmakers expressed alarm over the rising obesity rates in the United States, with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealing that in 23 states, more than one in three adults is living with obesity.
This marks a significant increase since 2013 when no state had an adult obesity prevalence at or above 35%. The hearing also highlighted the issue of childhood obesity, with 12 million children in the U.S. struggling with the condition. Concern regarding synthetic food dyes like Red 40, which are derived from petroleum, and are commonly used in products like candy and soft drinks was raised. I think we all need to understand as a group about how we’ve gotten to this point. The FDA has a position that food coloring like 40 are safe for a kid’s ingestion. Do both of you stand behind that Dr. Califf?” Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said during the hearing. Jim Jones, the FDA's deputy commissioner for human foods responded to Tuberville that the FDA has not reviewed the safety of Red 40 in over a decade. Robert F.
