Attorney general’s lawsuit says Annunciation House should be shut down for facilitating illegal immigration by caring for migrants.
“While the federal government perpetuates the lawlessness destroying this country, my office works day in and day out to hold these organizations responsible for worsening illegal immigration,” Paxton said.Paxton’s stated willingness to pursue other NGOs in addition to Annunciation House worries civic and religious leaders who fear additional legal action is coming against nonprofits that provide assistance to migrants.
Ruben Garcia, executive director of Annunciation House, said the nonprofit strives to meet basic human needs. Annunciation House opened in 1978 in part of a building that was donated by the Catholic diocese and is about 10 blocks from the border. Paxton’s lawsuit also accused Annunciation House of operating an illegal “stash house by potentially allowing others to use its real estate to engage in human smuggling.”
