Kelsea Ballerini Shares the Negative Effects Social Media Has Had on Her Body Image
singer said she used to compare herself to pop culture stars like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, loving their music but also idolizing their outfits, attitude, and bodies. She revealed that this has impacted how she wants other young women to look up to her in a different way and made her rethink her position as a role model.
“Now my definition of [being a role model] is, am I being honest? Like, am I pulling back the curtain? And am I being vulnerable?” Ballerini said. “Am I giving a young girl, not an image to look up to going, ‘ok I have to do that. I have to look like that. I have to approach life like that.’ Am I giving her the truth? Am I saying, ‘this is a hard world?’ When we are scrolling, we’re not looking at pictures of people that are real. This is filtered. You shouldn’t compare yourself to this.
“I think it’s so great to see that even someone like you who presents so beautifully and composed has really struggled with a lot of body dysmorphia. I think we all have dealt with it,”said. “Social media is not healthy for us. We have to really encourage ourselves to put the phone down. And also have a wide variety and a spectrum of bodies that we see–representation–that’s really important.”
