Actress Kelly Ripa revealed on Live with Kelly and Mark that she gained weight after quitting alcohol in 2017. Despite expecting a weight loss 'windfall', she actually gained 12 pounds, attributing it to increased sugar consumption.
Kelly Ripa has been open about her journey to sobriety, revealing that she actually gained weight after quitting alcohol in 2017. During a January 22nd episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, Ripa shared her experience with guest host Andy Cohen, who was participating in Dry January. Cohen expressed his surprise at not experiencing the usual weight loss associated with the month-long alcohol break.
Ripa responded by recounting her own expectations of weight loss when she quit drinking, which ultimately didn't materialize. Instead, she gained 12 pounds. Ripa explained that she attributed the weight gain to increased sugar consumption after quitting alcohol. She noted that alcohol often contains a significant amount of sugar, which can be masked by its bitter taste. This observation aligns with research indicating that cravings for sugar often increase after individuals stop drinking alcohol. Studies have shown that people with alcohol use disorders tend to experience heightened sugar cravings following treatment, and those hospitalized for alcohol use disorder often report increased sweet cravings shortly after quitting. In 2020, Ripa revealed that she had stopped drinking in 2017, coinciding with Ryan Seacrest becoming her co-host. While she didn't initially disclose her reasons, Seacrest jokingly suggested he had something to do with it. Ripa later shared that she made the decision to quit alongside her husband, attributing it to a desire for a healthier lifestyle. She mentioned doing a month of sobriety with her friends and finding it so beneficial that she never returned to drinking. Ripa described the experience as effortless and natural, stating that she simply didn't feel the need or desire to continue drinking.
