In the very first episode of “Gilmore Girls,” Lorelai Gilmore rings the doorbell to her parents’ sprawling brick estate in Hartford, Connecticut. Her mother, Emily, played by Kelly Bishop, opens the door and says, “Is it Easter already?” Seven seasons and 153 episodes later, Bishop says this opening line is her “favorite part” of the show. “That speaks volumes about the relationship and how much they see each other. It was just brilliant writing,' she tells TODAY.com.
Bishop says she found inspiration for Emily’s character from her own grandmother, Louise. “There was no way you were allowed to call her Grandma. No way, no way,” Bishop recalls. “I’m surprised I wasn’t supposed to say Mrs. Barr. Hello Mrs. Barr. She was very, very stern. She adored my brother. She liked him a lot better than me, but she let me play with her jewelry, so I didn’t care.” Still, she doesn’t mind playing characters that may be viewed as cruel or villainous.
