Keith Hernandez’s guest appearance on “Seinfeld” continues to pay dividends. The baseball great, who famously played himself on a 1992 episode of the pioneering sitcom, says he still gets paid for the role.
While appearing on the March 24 episode of the “SI Media with Jimmy Traina” podcast, Hernandez was asked how much his last residual check from the show was. “It varies. I can tell you that on an annual basis what it is,” he said. “It’s close to $5,000 still. It’s the gift that keeps giving.” “But remember one thing: I was the guest star,” he added. Hernandez, who now works as an announcer for the New York Mets on SNY, wasn’t just a guest star — he may be the most memorable guest star of the show’s nine-season run. In the two-part episode that aired during the series’ third season, he plays himself and becomes friendly with Jerry, only for Jerry to become jealous when Hernandez starts dating Elaine. The episode also famously lampooned the movie “JFK' with a storyline in which Kramer and Newman claim Hernandez spit at them after a game in 1987. George, meanwhile, tried to exaggerate his own friendship with Hernandez to continue getting unemployment benefits. Hernandez, who said he had never watched the series before starring in it, returned to appear in a brief capacity during “Seinfeld’s' 1998 series finale. He recently crossed paths with Jerry Seinfeld himself, too. Seinfeld was at a Mets spring training game in Port St. Lucie, Florida, when Hernandez walked into an elevator with Seinfeld. Hernandez had no idea Seinfeld was “right next to me” until someone pointed him out. “I said, ‘Jerry!’” Hernandez recalled, before adding that it was great to see him. Hernandez is certainly not the only well-known personality to make some extra cash on “Seinfeld.” TODAY’s Al Roker also appeared on “Seinfeld,” although he’s not quite sure his payday is on par with Hernandez’s $5,000 annual take. “I don’t know if it’s that much,” he said March 25 on TODAY about his role. Al played himself on a 1993 episode during the show’s fifth season.
