Jury gets case in trial of Keith Blake, charged with murder in Noah Beller’s shooting death
Closing arguments in the trial took a turn Wednesday morning when Porter Superior Court Judge Michael Fish gave the lesser offense of reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, for the jury’s consideration.“The crime of reckless homicide is included in the murder offense,” Fish told the jury when they entered the jury box to listen to closing arguments in the March 3, 2021 shooting death of Beller that happened following a paternity dispute.
“At the end of the day I wanted to come and tell our truth. Everything else was out of our control,” Stoker said.Prosecutors have said they would seek sentencing enhancements for use of a handgun if Blake was convicted. Charging documents note Blake’s previous felony convictions in January 2009 in Elkhart County for dealing in cocaine or a narcotic drug and criminal recklessness.
Brown took exception to the family’s version of the truth, saying Blake was not the instigator, but merely acting in self-defense when his attempts to give Beller the reimbursement for a paternity test went badly. “She made the story up,” Brown said of Stoker’s testimony that Blake attacked her son, “because she saw her son punch Keith Blake.”
“He gets punched in the face. He’s supposed to be brought there as some sort of enforcer and what has he provided to them? Nothing,” Salinas said of Blake’s efforts to procure paternity test results for the woman claiming Beller was the father of her child, and her boyfriend.
