Senior Labour sources are buoyant – it increasingly seems like they are being handed the next election on a platter 🖋️ FisherAndrew79 for ipaperviews

Another future headache will afflict Sunak when those whom Johnson has rewarded with a peerage take up their seats in the House of Lords. Tory cronyism will again be in the headlines, as appointees of dubious calibre become lawmakers for life at the behest of a disgraced ex-prime minister.

As for the SNP, their stock has plummeted in recent weeks, with their poll lead over Labour halving in Scotland since January. The route to a Labour majority at the next general election requires Sir Keir Starmer’s party to pick up seats in its former stronghold.

Furthermore, a recall petition against former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier is likely to result in a by-election in the seat of Rutherglen and Hamilton West. The seat ahd been won from the SNP by Labour in 2017 under Jeremy Corbyn, and should be a shoo-in for the party now.– one describing their luck as “unbelievable”, while another was relieved that it knocked their own dramas out of the spotlight. Their opponents are in disarray.

The impact of current scandals in the Labour Party will have limited impact because they are more than matched by an array of Tory sleaze. And if Labour seems a bit all over the shop on its policies, then that pales into insignificance with the ballooning NHS waiting lists, stagnant economy and falling living standards that dominate voters’ minds.

The coming months will throw up many more weeks like the last one – which should have been bad for Labour – but thanks to their opponents being worse, Labour finds itself insulated. If you can’t be good, be lucky.
