The Labour leader says the party’s biggest enemy is ‘complacency’, yet he appears to have fallen prey to itPaul Waugh: ‘If he’s shrewd, Starmer will allow the dissent from Sadiq Khan, Andy Burnham and Anas Sarwar’ similar demands from some of Starmer’s frontbenchers, MPs, local parties
Once Israel deems it has met its objectives, it is unlikely to want to get bogged down in administering Gaza and will instead erect a much bigger buffer zone around it, and only then “cease” firing if Hamas stops its rocket attacks. That’s the most likely “ceasefire” on the horizon. President Zelensky repeatedly said that a fully-fledged ceasefire – as opposed to humanitarian access for Black Sea grain supplies – would be a reward for Russian aggression. “Just imagine if Corbyn was in charge right now?” is the frequent refrain of Starmer allies – on both Ukraine and Gaza.
Since then, Biden’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has described calls for a ceasefire from progressive members of Congress as “repugnant” and “disgraceful”. An internal State Department memorandum even instructed its diplomats not to use three key phrases – “de-escalation/ceasefire”, “end to violence/bloodshed” or “restoring calm” – in public statements about the Gaza conflagration.
