Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Matulewicz wants a judge to order his name be on May primary ballot.

SUNBURY -- The Northumberland County district attorney missed the deadline for filing nominating petitions for his reelection bid and his name should not appear on the May primary ballot.

The elections board opposes the requests. Columbia County Senior Judge Thomas James, who is specially assigned, has scheduled a hearing for next Friday. The deadline for filing nomination petitions in the county that day was 4:30 p.m., the time the voter office closed. The petitions were not rejected because they were defective but because they were not timely filed in violation of the Election Code, it says.Matulewicz, who was seeking to run for a third term, contends in his court filing although it was after 4:30 p.m. office employees still were dealing with the public. The board disagrees, pointing out he can still run as an independent or conduct a write-in campaign.
