I won’t criticize an NFL player for clinging to every negotiated dollar he can. As the Spanos family told San Diegans over and over: It's a business.
Once news broke that Keenan Allen refused the Chargers’ request to take a pay cut, it was only a matter of time before some fans accused Allen of being greedy. These fans vented on social media after Allen confirmed Saturday that he wouldn't take less money to stay in Los Angeles. When he vetoed a pay cut, the Chargers traded him to the Bears for a draft pick. “There really was no emotion, it was, I’m not doing it,” the ex-Bolts receiver said at his introductory news conference with Chicago.
Plus, Allen had agreed to at least one pay cut on a negotiated salary — something Major League Baseball players aren't asked to do. Before his NFL career began, Allen knew how common — and critical — injuries could be. Allen, Cal's career leader in receptions despite having played only two-plus seasons, was bizarrely allowed to pursue an onside kick in a college game that was already decided.
