Opinion | 'Broncos Country is tired, George. Tired of watching teams take I-60, The Luke Wattenberg Turnpike, like an HOV lane, straight into the Broncos’ backfield.'
Most of all, they’re tired of hearing their repeated pleas for better blockers dismissed, ignored outright, or treated like the ravings of a conspiracy theorist in an Orange & Blue tin-foil hat.
Former GM John Elway plucked Garett Bolles with the 20th pick in the 2017 draft and declared left tackle solved for a generation. The Broncos haven’t selected a single offensive tackle since. Over that same stretch, the Chiefs and Chargers have taken two each. The Raiders have picked four. For all the hand-wringing over Bolles’ holding calls, the one argument — and assumption, in the case of Paton, Elway and the front office — in the big guy’s defense was his availability, No. 72’s acumen for always answering the bell despite numerous dings over the years.
Of the four quarterbacks who’ve thrown for the most touchdowns this season as of Monday morning, three had something in common — at least one of the tackles in front of them was originally drafted in either the first or second round. The Broncos, meanwhile, lined up against the presumptive AFC West champions with Cam Fleming, a fourth-round pick in 2014, at left tackle and Calvin Anderson, an undrafted free agent, manning the right tackle slot. And you wonder why Russ was sacked six times in Week 14? And 11 times, combined, over his last three tilts?
