Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating has launched a scathing attack on Defence Minister Richard Marles and the AUKUS security agreement, claiming it compromises Australia's military independence and is a futile effort.

“So, to be able to have the same capability in the future that in Mr Keating’s time he was planning for with the Collins Class submarines we must walk down this path,” Mr Marles said. While the US Defence Secretary did not explicitly reference the former Australian prime minister, he told reporters the AUKUS submarine deal was “well worth the investment”.
“This would only be true until the Prime Minister and Marles got their phone call from the President, seeking to mobilise Australian military assets … both would click their heels in alacrity and agreement,” Mr Keating said.
