In a major speech Foreign Minister Penny Wong says ex-PM Paul Keating diminished his legacy with his attacks on the Albanese government’s foreign policy approach.

Less than two hours after she completed her speech, Mr Keating launched a fresh attack on Senator Wong, saying she had spoken only in platitudes and had not added “one iota of substance” to encouraging both the US and China find common cause. “In particular, there is much frenzied discussion in political and media circles over timelines and scenarios when it comes to Taiwan. It is the most dangerous of parlour games,” she said.“So I will say it now to the National Press Club – to avoid any possible misunderstanding: our job is to lower the heat on any potential conflict, while increasing pressure on others to do the same. That may not sell as many newspapers today, but it will help you to sell them for a lot longer.
