A Kearns man was charged Friday in the killing of a man outside a Salt Lake City nightclub, whom police say died after a single punch to the face.

Court documents allege that Penisini punched 37-year-old Yusuf Jeylani Mohammed in a “random” attack in the early morning hours of July 10.

A witness told police that Mohammed was confronted by Penisini and a group of other men outside of the nightclub July 10. When Mohammed asked the men “what’s up,” Penisini punched Mohammed in the face, court documents state. Mohammed fell onto his back and was “immediately unconscious.” The witness said he was also assaulted by the group of men.

When police arrived at nearly 2 a.m., they found Mohammed unconscious on the ground and bleeding heavily from his face, court documents state. Despite lifesaving efforts from first responders, Mohammed later died in the hospital. Penisini is being held without bail at the Salt Lake County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 27.
