John Wick died three years ago in John Wick: Chapter 4's ending, but that's not stopping Keanu Reeves from returning to the role over and over again. The highly skilled and feared assassin seemingly met his demise after killing the Marquis of the High Table.
His body falling over on the steps shortly after, and Winston and the Bowery King standing at his grave, suggested John was dead for good. But it's proven difficult for the John Wick franchise to keep Reeves' character out of sight and out of mind, even if the Baba Yaga is deceased. He already returned for a small role in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina last year. And with the franchise continuing to be a strong performer for Lionsgate, the studio has given Chad Stahelski freedom to expand it in many ways. While the franchise is developing various projects that don't revolve around Reeves' character, they aren't ignoring him entirely. John Wick will be back not once or twice, but three times . The 3 Upcoming John Wick Projects Keanu Reeves Is Returning For The newest chance for Reeves to play John Wick again has come with an untitled John Wick video game. He's directly involved in the project's development , and Reeves will be voicing the character, too, as highlighted with the simple "Yeah" at the game reveal teaser's conclusion. Details are still scarce, but the game will be a prequel story set before the first film that allows players to become the deadly hired gun. The John Wick game is not Reeves' only opportunity to voice the character in a prequel setting. Lionsgate previously announced plans for an animated John Wick movie that will tell the tale of the "impossible task" John accomplished to free himself from this world. The untitled film was announced last year. It's directed by Shannon Tindle and written by Vanessa Taylor, with Stahelski also producing. Those two returns are certainties at this point, with both projects currently in production. But there's also a plan for Reeves to return to live-action should John Wick 5 happen as Lionsgate hopes. The sequel has been in development for the last year, and while a firm timetable for it has yet to emerge, Stahelski has indicated that progress is being made. So, between the video game, animated prequel, and John Wick 5, Keanu Reeves has three John Wick returns lined up. More could come, too, should other ideas for his story to expand in the past or future emerge. Why Keanu Reeves Keeps Coming Back After John Wick's Death When John died in John Wick 4, it was deemed a fitting conclusion for the character. There's no real happy ending coming for him, so faking his death would just prolong what seems inevitable. But it makes sense that the franchise has struggled to leave him behind, regardless of if he's really alive or dead. Keanu is the John Wick franchise in many ways. The series has learned the hard way that audiences might not really care for stories set in this world without him. But with the main series finding more success with each entry, Lionsgate is incentivized to keep it going and retain Keanu's skills as long as possible. Using the franchise's movie star is how its able to experiment with expanding into different media forms. Video games and animated movies set in this world both present rich storytelling possibilities. Rather than try them with secondary or brand-new characters, it makes sense to rely on Keanu's name and familiar face to generate interest. This also makes them feel necessary to the main series instead of loosely connected avenues for universe building. As a fan of the series, I'll always welcome more of Keanu in this role, especially when it comes in newer forms. But it also makes it harder for John Wick to ever truly move beyond the titular character. Perhaps that's for the best in the long run.
