Short Round actor Ke Huy Quan reveals that he hoped his sidekick would return in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Released in 1989, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is the third movie following Harrison Ford's intrepid archeologist. The character first appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 and would reprise the role for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Variety, following his Best Actor win at the Oscars for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Quan shares that he was hopeful about reprising his role as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The actor had collaborated with Spielberg not only on the Raiders of the Lost Ark sequel, but also The Goonies in 1985, something that he's evidently very grateful for.
"I was secretly hoping. But honestly, Steven has given me so much — not one movie, but two movies. And they were the first ones to put an Asian face in a big Hollywood movie.”A Short Round Return Can Still Happen Short Round may not have featured in Indy's third outing or the divisive Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it's still possible that Quan will get to reprise his role for a future project.
Although few details are known regarding what the show will be about, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold, who is seemingly also spearheading development on the series, confirmed in December that Ford's hero won't be a part of it. He also confirmed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena, Jones' goddaughter in the upcoming sequel, will similarly not be featured.
Since Quan is now in his early 50s, the show could catch up with a version of Short Round that's very different from how audiences last saw him. Perhaps the former sidekick followed in Indy's footsteps and became a swashbuckling archeologist, or maybe he left adventuring behind for something less action-packed when a new quest ropes him back in.
