The storm will come within 150 miles of San Diego, veering offshore near Ensenada

Hurricane Kay is weakening to a tropical storm off Baja California but is expected to produce wild weather Friday in San Diego County, with possible wind gusts of 80 mph to 100 mph in East County, three to six inches of rain in the mountains, and thunderstorms that could light up the whole region, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say Kay will turn offshore early Friday roughly 100 to 150 miles south-southeast of San Diego. By then, it will already have generated winds and moisture that will flow into Southern California, creating especially dicey driving conditions on such key travel routes as Interstate 8. The storm could dump 2.5 inches to five inches of rain in the local deserts. And it will whip up gale force winds off the coast of San Diego County. Surf will be in the three to six foot range at some local beaches.

The weather service says Friday will begin with a sharp increase in the risk of wildfires when strong, hot winds blow into the region from the east. The winds will gain speed as they move down the western side of the mountains, potentially producing gusts in the 80 mph to 100 mph range near Julian and Alpine. The winds could hit 40 mph at the coast, especially in South County. It will begin to rain heavily by late morning or early afternoon. Forecasters estimate that 0.
