KAUST’s MFDA model chooses from 10,000 solvents and boost organic thermoelectric output by 20×, making waste-heat harvesting practical.

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology have unveiled a data‑driven method for picking the perfect solvent when fabricating organic thermoelectric devices . These are thin‑film systems that harvest waste heat and turn it into electricity. By guiding polymer molecules into the most conductive orientation, the model‑based “solvent selector” raised device output twentyfold in proof‑of‑concept trials, offering a low‑cost route to greener power scavenging.

“This tool is very useful for predicting which solvent will render the polymer orientation that you need, while screening large databases of solvents,” explains co‑author Diego Rosas Villalva, now at the University of Bern. “This saves a lot of time and resources on optimization through trial and error.
