eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda is confident of success should the DA go to court over the health of the city's beaches. 🏖️ ECRNewsWatch KZN

The opposition party says it's considering legal action over what it says was a misrepresentation of the quality of water at Durban's beaches during the festive season.

It says among the proof it has is the postponement of an annual lifeguard endurance event towards the end of last year, with poor water quality due to high E.Coli levels cited as a reason. The DA has accused the mayor of having put the lives of local beachgoers and holidaymakers at risk by inviting them to Durban's beaches.on Wednesday, Kaunda poured cold water over the opposition party's allegations.

"Even independent companies came on board and they released their result hence the mayor did not go in that period in December to go and swim in Umhlanga because we are still working on assessing the quality of Umhlanga beach. "Then the DA demanded me to go and swim there. I said, 'The beach in terms of our assessments it is okay, but we still need to assess further’. That's why I went to the central beaches. People started to flock at the beach in Umhlanga, but there is not even a single case, so it talks to the quality of water."
