Her post included instructions on who to contact, what to say, and a deadline of Friday, January 30, urging fans to make calls to their senators.
Perry’s message read: “Who: You, the power is in your hands. What: Call your senators. When: Now. We have until Friday, January 30th to block $10 billion from going through to ICE. Where: Call 224-3121. Why: Because it’s time to turn anger into action.” The final slide even provided an example template of what to say when contacting senators. The post was blocked for comments on Instagram but has received more than 121,000 likes. Most recently, federal immigration agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37‑year‑old ICU nurse and U.S. citizen, during confrontations with demonstrators. Perry’s post on social media urging fans to speak to their local representatives about ICE comes just days before Friday, January 30—the last day for constituents to contact their senators before the Senate votes on a spending bill that includes additional funding for ICE. What Happens Next While ICE already has roughly $75 billion in funding, the bill proposes an extra $10 billion, which has drawn criticism from progressive lawmakers and immigration activists. On Saturday, bettors pushed odds of a the odds of a federal government shutdown, with two major prediction markets putting the chances at about 75 percent. Last week, seven House Democrats voted in favor of a $64.4 billion bill to advance a DHS spending measure that includes about $10 billion for ICE. Calls for the Senate to reject the measure intensified ON Saturday after Pretti’s death as video of the shooting spread widely online. If the spending bills are not approved by the Senate, a partial government shutdown will go into effect on January 31.
