Chelsea, shown by referee Emily Heaslip during the Barclays Women's Super League match at Stamford Bridge, London. Picture date: Sunday January 26, 2025. The Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe will face a two-game suspension for the red card she received during Arsenal 's Women's Super League match at Chelsea yesterday.
However television pictures indicated that the referee showed a red card in response to something said to her by McCabe leading to the immediate upgrade from a yellow card to a red card. This has been confirmed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the body responsible for refereeing the professional game in England, who told me that McCabe received a straight red card for"using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action" contrary to the Laws of the Game.
McCabe has been the only Arsenal player to start all 22 of the games the club have played this season. However she is also the most cautioned players in the history of the Women's Super League, receiving 37 yellow cards. Sunday's red card was only the second time she has been dismissed following an explosion at home to Manchester United in 2022.
