Swimming legend Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead have been selected to serve as flag bearers for the United States during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The news was announced Aug. 8 on TODAY. Ledecky learned about her selection from fellow Team USA swimmer Bobby Finke in a video that was shared on X. Ledecky was visibly moved by the news. “You’re making my cry,” she said. “This is a huge honor,” she added.
Ledecky’s win in the 800-meter freestyle was her fourth consecutive in the event at the Olympics, making her the first woman to do so. The 27-year-old swimmer is now the sixth athlete ever to win four golds in the same individual event, joining Denmark’s Paul Elvstrom; America’s Al Oerter, Carl Lewis and Michael Phelps; and Cuba’s Mijain Lopez. Rower Nick Mead won a gold medal in Paris in the men's four. “Try to represent rowing as best as possible,” Mead said of the news.
