Katie Ledecky just earned her first medal at the Paris Olympics. On Saturday, July 27, Ledecky placed third in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, earning her third medal in the event and her 11th overall. In the event some news outlets dubbed the 'race of the century,' Ledecky finished behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who is the current world record holder, and Canada's Summer McIntosh.
The swimmer made her debut at the 2012 London Olympics and won the gold in the 800-meter freestyle at age 15. Before Saturday's race, she had won a total of 10 medals, including seven gold medals. Ledecky has the opportunity at the Paris Olympics to surpass the record for most Olympic gold medals won by a female swimmer, which is currently held by Jenny Thompson with eight medals.
