26Katie Britt’s runoff victory Tuesday over Rep. Mo Brooks puts her in the position to be the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama.
For much of the state’s history since the Civil War, Alabama voters sent mostly white men to the Senate. Many of them were elected for the first time when they were in their 50s.“She’s not only the first woman from Alabama, but youngest United States senators and that double title is incredibly important,” said Jon Gray, a GOP strategist from Mobile. “She’s going to be here to define and shape Alabama for a long time.
“With Shelby going, we lose that seniority he has,” Shaw said. “When she can eventually get into those senior positions, it will reap dividends. Incumbency is what it is, and the fact that Republicans do well in Alabama, I don’t see a problem with her being in the Senate for as long as she wants.”‘Fill the shoes’
Ryan Williamson, an assistant professor of political science at Auburn University, said Shelby’s influence in the election propelled Britt to her Senate win more than former President Donald Trump’s last-minute endorsement of her. Steven Taylor, a political science professor at Troy University, said that Britt will be navigating “a different political environment” in the Senate where earmarking on behalf of projects within the state often take a backseat in the public eye from hot-button culture war debates.
