Kara Water, a company founded by Cody Soodeen, has developed a revolutionary air-to-water device inspired by the Namibian desert beetle. This technology produces clean, mineralized water in any environment, addressing the global water crisis.
Access to clean drinking water remains one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century. From rural communities with no infrastructure to urban areas facing contamination issues, millions struggle daily to access safe, drinkable water. Recognizing this crisis, Cody Soodeen, co-founder and CEO of Kara Water, developed an air-to-water device which is capable of producing pure, mineralized water in virtually any environment.
Inspired by nature and driven by necessity, the device has already produced over a million liters of clean water. Growing up in Pennsylvania, Soodeen and his family relied on well water and for years, they faced health issues that no doctor could explain. Eventually, a test revealed their well water was severely contaminated with harmful bacteria and farm pesticides. That revelation led his family to abandon tap water in favor of bottled water, a temporary solution that sparked an enduring awareness of water quality issues. “It’s not just a third-world problem. Even here in America, millions deal with water contamination, microplastics, and other pollutants every day. I knew there had to be a better way,” Soodeen recalls. The inspiration for Kara Water’s revolutionary system came from an unexpected source: the Namibian desert beetle. This insect, which thrives in one of the world’s driest regions, survives by capturing water vapor from the air on its shell. Once enough moisture accumulates, the beetle consumes it—a process known as vapor harvesting. The device uses advanced desiccant materials to replicate the beetle’s process. As air passes through the device, the desiccant absorbs water vapor, which is then heated to extract and distill the water. The result is clean, pure water stored in a UV-sterilized tank, with essential minerals added during dispensing for optimal hydration. Each Kara Pure unit can produce up to 2.5 gallons (10 liters approx) of water per day, making it an ideal solution for households, offices, and remote areas. Beyond its water production capabilities, the system also functions as a gentle dehumidifier, improving indoor air quality without significantly altering room humidity. “This technology is versatile and works even in challenging conditions. That’s the beauty of the design—it’s not just for tropical climates; it’s for everyone,” he noted. The device’s compact size and energy efficiency set it apart from traditional air-to-water systems, which often rely on bulky cooling coil technology. Since its commercial launch in late 2021, Kara Water has sold over 1,000 units and produced more than a million liters of clean water. The company is scaling production to meet growing demand, with its next-generation devices set to enter production soon. “This is more than just a product; it’s a movement. We’ve already prevented countless plastic water bottles from entering landfills and oceans, and we’re just getting started. Our mission is to provide sustainable, reliable water solutions for people everywhere,” Soodeen explained. Now, the company also has the potential to transform the $300 billion global water market, offering a sustainable alternative to bottled water and traditional purification systems, one drop at a time. “We’ve already produced over a million liters of water, and that’s just the beginning. Our goal is to make clean, drinkable water available to everyone, everywhere, no matter the challenges they face,” Soodeen concluded
