Kanye West sparks controversy on social media after wearing a 'White Lives Matter' shirt at his Yeezy fashion show.
Per the Anti-Defamation League, the phrase is considered a"hate slogan," crafted by White supremacists who co-opted the"Black Lives Matter" movement -- used by Black people protesting police brutality -- and reframed it.
It's unclear what statement West was aiming to make with these new t-shirts, but his relationship with race has long been a tricky one, with West -- a champion of former President Trump's MAGA movement -- at one point,West's decision to wear the shirt sparked major backlash from fellow musicians, public figures and fans who believe West has gone too far with his statement-making moment.
Jaden Smith took to Twitter not long after the show sharing that he had to leave the event, adding that he wasn't feeling the 45-year-old musician and fashion designer's message. "I Don’t Care Who’s It Is If I Don’t Feel The Message I’m Out," Smith wrote, following that tweet up with one that simply read,"Black Lives Matter."
