A 22-year-old man was charged on Thursday with the killing of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro, whose June death in Kansas City, Missouri, sparked local outrage and inspired the creation of the Trump administration’s national law enforcement push, Operation Legend. According to the Kansas City Star, Ellis, who was arrested earlier in the day and booked in the county jail, faces felony charges of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapons and armed criminal action on two counts. The young boy had a cardiac condition that had required multiple open-heart surgeries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Kansas City was already tense from unrest over the death of George Floyd, and the slaying of 4-year-old Taliferro led to heated protests. Operation Legend on July 22, stating it would send hundreds of federal law enforcement agents to Kansas City and multiple other cities across the U.S. where violent crime has risen; the plan received mixed reactions amid controversy over the Trump administration’s deployment of federal agents in Portland, Oregon.
