The position opened up because former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy left to take the same role for the Washington Commanders. Bieniemy's perceived lateral move is widely believed to be an effort to escape the shadow of Chiefs' head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Per USA Today, Bieniemy -- who is Black -- has interviewed for head coaching jobs with at least 15 different franchises over the past few years and still has not landed a head coaching job.
